Heater Replacement: what it involves
Replacing a pool heater is more than unbolting one box and setting another. The new unit has to be sized to the pool's surface area and how warm you want it, matched to the electrical circuit or gas supply that's there, plumbed so the water flow is right, and bonded to the pool's equipotential bonding grid. Getting any one of those wrong leads to a heater that runs all day without keeping up, or one that trips breakers.
Most replacements in Pasco go heat pump for heat pump, but it's the right moment to ask whether that's still the best choice. A spa that needs heat fast may be better on gas or propane. A pool heated only in spring and fall may not need the biggest unit on the shelf. And an older home may need a new breaker or wire size for a modern heat pump, which is better found on the estimate than on install day.
When replacement beats repair
- The compressor, coil or heat exchanger has failed on a heater over about 8 years old
- Repairs have been needed more than once in the past year or two
- Heavy corrosion on the cabinet, coil fins or burner tray
- The heater can't keep the pool at temperature even when it runs nonstop
- Parts for the model are discontinued or back-ordered
Ask for a repair price and a replacement price side by side before you decide.
Free EstimateCommon methods
Sizing to the pool
The contractor looks at the pool's surface area, whether it has a spa, sun and wind exposure, and the temperature you want, then picks a BTU size that can keep up.
Electrical or gas hookup
Heat pumps need the right breaker, wire size and disconnect; gas units need the right line size, regulator and venting clearances. Upgrades are priced up front.
Plumbing, bonding and start-up
The heater is plumbed into the return line with any bypass valves it needs, bonded to the pool grid, started and checked for temperature rise.
Permits for a new pool heater
Many Florida building offices require a permit for a new or replacement pool heater, mainly so an inspector can check the electrical connection and the bonding. Gas heaters add gas piping. In unincorporated Pasco the permit goes through Pasco County Building Construction Services and its online portal; inside New Port Richey or Port Richey, or in Hernando County, the local office for the parcel applies. Ask your contractor to pull it in their name and include it in the price.

What a replacement costs
Swimply's 2026 guide lists gas heaters at about $1,500 to $6,000 installed and heat pumps at about $2,000 to $8,000, and notes that a new circuit or gas line is the most common surprise cost. HomeGnome puts typical heat pump installs at about $2,500 to $7,000. Your written estimate is what counts.

Heater Replacement questions
How long does a replacement take?
Install is usually one day once the heater and permit are ready. Electrical upgrades can add time.
Can I go from gas to a heat pump?
Usually, yes, but the heat pump will need its own electrical circuit, which affects the price.
Is a bigger heater always better?
Not always. It should match the pool and how you use it; oversizing raises the price without much benefit for a pool heated steadily.
